The IT infrastructure Library (ITIL® ) is the internationally recognized framework for the delivery and support of cost-effective, high-quality IT services.

ITIL® , which is now established across thousands of organisations world-wide. provides a robust foundation for IT service delivery and support and has been adopted by major technology organisation like Microsoft, HP, Sun and Dell who all have developed their own adaptation the framework (e.g. Microsoft MOF)

ITIL® has evolved since its inception in 1989 into a comprehensive framework that supports the entire lifecycle of service delivery and support, from service strategy to service operation, and continual service improvement. ITIL® v3, developed in 2007, is now closely aligned and integrated with other complimentary standards and frameworks, such as ISO20000, COBIT and ISO27001.

ITIL® certification is increasingly demanded for any IT Professional working in the IT services environment, whether in management, planning or operational support

ITIL® Qualification Scheme

  1. A student may achieve the ITIL® Diploma by gaining a total of 22 credits.
  2. These can be achieved via alternative streams (by taking a combination of Service Lifecycle or Service capability modules).
  3. As a pre-requisite to taking the advanced modules, the student must have achieved certification at the foundation level.

Currently (during 2008), the student also has the option to study for Version 2 or Version 3 of the syllabus but if pursuing V2, must take the appropriate bridging courses (either at foundation or managers level) to achieve v3 certification.

As opposed to organizing according to IT delivery sectors, ITIL® is now based on a Lifecycle approach to IT service Management.
